WhatsApp / Facebook really should take a lesson from them.According to WhatsApp, the latest update to their Windows client is now available to users and is a huge upgrade compared to the original web-based version. I also use Viber, which has an excellent fully-featured desktop app that syncs with your other devices, but doesn’t require tethering to my mobile. I don’t understand the point of WhatsApp Desktop - the only benefit I can see is that you can type with a real keyboard.

Many of the settings available on mobile aren’t available on Mac either. I thought the desktop app would improve the media browsing, which it does not.

I wanted to use this seamlessly with the Photos app, dragging and dropping images each way, which I can’t. I expected I could use this independently of my mobile, which I can’t. I expected to be able to update my status from the desktop app, which I can’t. I wanted to use this for video calls from my Mac, which I can’t. It amazes me that a desktop app could be significantly less powerful and capable than a mobile app. But my impression is that the WhatsApp people have simply not made the effort in terms of getting to grips with the Electron framework. In principle, the desktop app should be as good - if not better - than the mobile version. It's built using Electon, a powerful cross-platform development tool. The reason why the desktop app is so inferior is pretty obvious. Joy! Other times, they don't and you are back to a plodding, one-by-one operation. Sometimes, I can delete a whole slew of unwanted posts on the mobile app, and they magically disappear from the desktop app. Secondly, synchronization between the desktop and mobile apps is very "hit and miss". You have to delete them, laboriously, one by one. On the desktop app, the process is excruciatingly painful. You can highlight them all very quickly and then delete with one button press.

Two major complaints: (Your mileage may vary)įirstly, deleting a large number of unwanted posts on the mobile app is very quick and simple.

As others have pointed out, the desktop version of WhatsApp is significantly less capable than the mobile version on the iPhone.
